Koen Wilgehof-Sodaar

amsterdam 1963 / visual artist - graphic artist - designer

From an early age, Koen was captivated by the world of art. He educated himself by making visits to museums, galleries, the concert hall or a theatre. Sometimes just during school hours. It shaped his view of the world and propelled the urge to tell stories with images. The daring to step off the beaten track is clearly expressed in his work, which shows no linear line in style and development.

The end result does not result from the use of certain materials or the application of a specific technique. Rather, it is the other way round: stories, emotions and experiences require imagination. This, in turn, prompts the choice of form to match. This results in a multifaceted oeuvre that includes paintings and objects.

Koen's work is included in both corporate and private collections and is enthusiastically received by a wide audience.

Dees Wilgehof-Sodaar

's-Hertogenbosch 1969 / visual artist - writer

Since childhood, Dees has been fascinated by stories. Even while studying psychology, it became clear that this is where her passion lies: telling her own stories and those of others.

Dees immersed herself in the oral tradition of lore in the US. Having completed the Writers' Academy, specialising in storytelling, she now carries a wealth of information with her.

In name names Dees humorously and self-deprecatingly recounts events in her daily life from sometimes unexpected perspectives. In dozens of sweet, funny and touching stories, recognisable and sometimes wrenching, she takes you into her own chaotic world.

Telling stories together

In addition to their autonomous work, Dees and Koen make performances, audiovisual and spatial installations. In doing so, they choose different forms and make crossovers easily.

Dees and Koen consider themselves primarily storytellers and storytellers. They do so from their agency for creative communication: Wilgehof+Sodaar. But they also work closely together in the arts.

In different ways, they explore the tension between dreams, desires, ideals and reality. Not to pass judgement, but to make the audience pause to consider topics that affect everyone. Their artworks are based on recognisable themes: loneliness, happiness, diversity and connection. With their work, they want to encourage more involvement in a society that is changing rapidly.
