Koen’s work is diverse in materials, style, and imagery. However, two themes run through all of his works: the tension between ideals and reality, and the search for compassion and humanity. Form, technique, and material usage are secondary to the emotions and thoughts that underlie a work. His goal is rarely to work towards a predetermined end result, but to evoke recognition in the viewer. If that is accomplished, a work is successful.
